The All Souls books by Professor Deborah Harkness are a contemporary take on vampire novels, combining myth, history, and material culture in unique ways. To date, I have worked on the ways the books (and television show) handle material culture in a variety of ways.
The Art History of All Souls
I began the blog as part of a desire to address the ways the books handle art and material culture for an audience who may not be familiar with how art history works, including how to talk about objects and where to go for more information. In each post, I provide a general history of the objects mentioned in the books and a reading list that gives readers an idea of where to go for more information about that particular object or object type. The blog was expanded in Fall 2018 to include a consideration of the television adaptation and how it handled art history and material culture; blog posts on the TV adaptation also include ideas on intersectional feminism and the theory of adaptation.
